Tony, from Srigley Street Plumbing and Drainage explains why a plumber and a plumbing contractor have two different work descriptions. While a lot believe they serve the same purpose, they are not necessarily the same. A plumber is responsible to dealing with a clogged drain, a leaky faucet or any other plumbing problem while a plumbing contractor is commonly called when there is a major plumbing concern or a new plumbing system needs to be installed in a new home or during a remodelling project. Both have certain benefits in certain situations and in some cases, either may be able to repair a plumbing problem. However, more serious tasks are essentially called to plumbing contractors.
Plumbing contractors do not usually take small jobs like backed-up shower drains or leaky sinks. Instead, they attend to large plumbing issues such as eliminating faulty septic systems and replacing them. They replace pipes or make a complete reconstruction of radiator heating systems. In some instances, a small plumbing company is spearheaded by a professional plumbing contractor.
Plumbing Contractors for Major Remodels, New Buildings and Additions
Whereas they are particularly the right people to call for serious plumbing concerns, most tasks of plumbing contractors are focused on entirely replacing or installing new plumbing for a whole structure or room. This is basically where a plumbing contractor becomes different from a plumber. The former undergoes specific training which an average plumber does not have. Such training prepares the former for large, more serious plumbing jobs.
Also, plumbing contractors arrive in the picture in situations which a lot of homeowners wouldn’t expect such as the installation and maintenance of water heating units (hydronic and solar panel heating and cooling systems) as well as the installation and maintenance of security devices like water conditioning equipment, gas earthquake valves, back flow prevention equipment and gas control valves. These are all works that necessitate the skills and professionalism of a plumbing contractor.
Tips When Hiring a Plumbing Contractor
Hiring a plumbing contractor saves you from all the hassles during a remodelling project or a serious plumbing concern. More than that, he can also help you save thousands of dollars on your project as you can assure the efficiency and correctness of his work. However, this can only happen if the person you’ve hired is indeed experienced and knowledgeable to what he’s doing. Therefore, before hiring one, get references from relatives and friends. Plumbers do other tasks too, like this guy here.
Get estimates from different companies. The more quotes, the better as this lets to compare more choices and privileges. Also, make sure to meet with your prospective contractor before making the decision. Meeting with him is a good idea as this will give a first impression of how their company works to meet customer needs. He can also give you a couple of hints to the service you can expect from him. You can ask for his license and insurance.
Bear in mind too, that irrespective of how good and interesting an estimate from a company is, this does not mean a good service as well.
